"The harder I work, the luckier I get." Samuel Goldwyn
I believe that a positive attitude is one of the most powerful assets that you can have in life. That being said...
I received an e-mail the other day with a quote from Zig Ziglar.
"Positive thinking won't let you do anything, but it will help you do everything better than negative thinking will."
There are some people who will argue that positive thinking will allow you to do anything. The problem I have with that is that the only examples that can be given are narrative rather than empirical.
Stories sound good, but the invisible evidence gets ignored. For every person that succeeds by thinking positive, how many people fail while being positive. There are some very optimistic and positive people that audition for American Idol; some of them can't sing. Positivity won't allow them to overcome tone-deafness.
In professional sports, I'm sure that both teams go into the championship game knowing that they can and will win. Only one is correct.
Preparation and luck always come into play. Always.
I advocate living life with a positive attitude and a problem solving mindset, but you can put yourself in harms way if you disregard the fact that life's story contains more variables than we can count.
"Knowledge breeds confidence; confidence breeds enthusiasm; and enthusiasm is an important key to being and doing more with your life." - Zig Ziglar

You bring clarity to a controversial point. For those who are highly optimistic and have difficulty in understanding your point, please don't throw your hands up and regard this as pessimitic thinking. Know that positive thinking gets you closer than focusing on obvious obstacles and possible short comings. Positive thinking is part of a winning strategy not miracle making. Good point Mr. Burrows.
